Fatal Run for Atari 2600: an early precursor to saving game progress?
Fatal Run for Atari 2600: an early precursor to saving game progress?
I never cared about all the epic games, on Fifth-gen systems that were obviously designed as quests to be saved to memory cards. I was stoked to play arcade Defender on the Williams' Greatest Hits for the PlayStation... or better still - GalagaGalaga on the Atari 7800. But Fatal Run for the Atari 2600 had an interesting "Continue" option on the intro screen. A precursor to game-saves? Maybe not, but a cool game in it's own way.
Fatal Run was released in 1989, well past the prime of the Atari 2600 - both the 5200 and 7800 were on the scene. It's graphics are fairly primitive even by late 80's standards, but this game had some interesting options, including a "Continue" option on the startup screen. This feature simply let you jump into a later part of the game, but I wonder if this wasn't a precursor to memory cards for gaming consoles and the advent of games that one could easily put hours and hours into a quest.
On-Screen Movie Premiere
Even if you think we're full-of-it with our Atari 2600 game-save theory, see if you can next identify the movie playing on our inset screen. Do you know the title? :)
