GameStop has listings for the upcoming Tiger Electronics LCD handheld game reissues

Tiger Electronics LCD handheld game reissues
With a non-specific release date of Fall '20, GameStop lists four titles from the reissued handheld games.
Hasbro is re-releasing four of the Tiger Electronic's handheld LCD games sometime during 2020's holiday season. GameStop has four titles listed with a TBA release date. Requiring 2 AA batteries, these reissued games are "inspired by" the originals. It's hard to say what that really means as a comparison to the ones I recall from the 80s and 90s.

The four titles being released are:
  1. Sonic the Hedgehog 3
  2. X-Men Project X
  3. Transformers: Generation 2
  4. The Little Mermaid
These handhelds, back in the day, were a novelty rather than "video games." Each one usually had only one game and the gameplay was rather odd to say the least. The word 'primitive' comes to mind, compared to other handhelds on the market. Sure, the Tiger devices were far less expensive, but the entertainment delivered was on par with the cost.

I think these reissued Tiger games will appeal to those who owned them in the past or folks who know about them. A lot of sales will be nostalgia driven, but a few of these do look like fun to play now and then. I'm sure one or two will wind up in my stash.

In the '70s, I recall fourth grade as the year that kids I knew began bringing all sorts of crazy handheld video games to school. From Mattel Electronic Football to Merlin the Electronic Wizard, we were all fascinated by these devices. We had no idea this would spawn a genre that would last my lifetime. I adore my 2DS and think fondly of all the odd handhelds I've owned over the decades. Nostalgia is a funny beast. Here's hoping the Tiger Electronics games are good nostalgic fun... or at least close!
