Surprisingly, Nintendo was founded during the Ottoman Empire. This was very pre-Mario :)
Nintendo was originally a playing-card company, founded on September 23, 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi in Kyoto, Japan. Many of us think fondly back to the mid 80s when the Nintendo Entertainment System shot new life into the video game industry and spurred game development in ways that hadn't been seen fo quite some time.
This image often accompanies articles about Nintendo's founding, leading many to assume it's their first HQ. Apparently this is true. The image is a pre-World War II photo of Nintendo's headquarters.
