Selena Gomez re-releases her 2015 album, Revival, on cassette

I love seeing a modern artist releasing their work on analog media, but one of Selena's tracks has a serious twist.
When I first encountered a story about Revival being released on cassette, my inner retro nerd smiled - the outer one too. I loved buying records back in the 80s. I discovered bands like AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Judas Priest, and countless others via LPs. I usually only played my albums once - to record them onto cassette tapes.

This was my early 80's method of preserving my favorite bands. When the tapes wore out, I could re-record them. Needless to say, I had a ton of cassettes and still have a fondness for the way a pencil fits into the sprocket. But there's a serious tone to this release.

Radio Shack tape layer Selena Gomez is an executive producer of Netflix's new show 13 Reasons Why that deals with teen suicide. The story focuses around the teens who conspired in their classmate's demise. Prior to taking her life, Hannah Baker (played by Katherine Langford) recorded cassettes that speak to those who led to her demise.

Gomez lent a song from Revival to the show's soundtrack. Releasing Revival on cassette has a connection to the show's suicide theme. However you feel about the analog link to the teen's demise, you know the Internet has managed to blow it out of proportion.

I love analog music and I think there's a cool-factor in here and it brings awareness to the tragedy of teen suicide. For me, what can be seen as a nod to analogue music for a popular artist of our day also serves as awareness to a cause. How many of your favorite bands have released a cassette lately? I'm down with any modern artist who decided to go analog! Look for Revivial on cassette in late June.
